External Links - New / Blank Window or Same Window?

A question that has perplexed my brain ever since I began researching SEO was whether it was more beneficial to have an external link open in a new window or from the same window. I’ve done some research on this and here are my results.

What Really Upsets Me About Yahoo/Overture

I received an email today from Overture. It was about my UK search engine marketing account stating that

it’s halfway through the month and your current spent may not meet our minimum monthly ad spend.

What the heck is with Yahoo? Don’t they care about money or their customers at all? I hardly have the time to spend money on PPC programs, let alone in the UK, and they send me this?

Expect Big Changes in Google Soon

The current use of backlinks is quite easily manipulated, and Google knows this. So why would they keep this business model if it is flawed? Simply put, they won’t. We can expect to see changes soon that make the simple method of having backlinks from high PR sites nearly useless.

The importance of simply buying mass backlinks in general is going to diminish completely. You might be saying “this is old news” right about now, but it’s not. The value is no longer going to be valued on the basic principle of your links existing on other websites, so having a footer link on a PR8 page isn’t going to matter very much.
